Komorebi

Updated: May 4, 2019

Komorebi this!

I spent a large part of yesterday (my excuse is that I am recovering from a virus) lying on the grass looking up through the leaves and branches of the trees to the sky. It is a wonderful way to relax, and watching the shapes shift and the birds dash about is a great way to let your mind wander and drift over memories and thoughts of the past - it almost made me feel like a child again.

Anyway, I thought I'd check if there is a single word or phrase to describe gazing up through the trees. The closest I could find was a Japanese term, Komorebi. There is no equivalent English term, or Polish, or from any other language it seems. Those Japanese huh? Well, Komorebi roughly translates as “the scattered light that filters through when sunlight shines through trees".

So, I was Komorebi-ing today. I recommend it!
